About CATSINaM

The Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM) is the national peak membership body representing and advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses, midwives, and students. Established in 1997, CATSINaM has been dedicated to supporting its members for over 25 years. Guided by the principle of "Unity and Strength through Caring," CATSINaM leads the nursing and midwifery workforce to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through partnerships, leadership, advocacy, and workforce engagement.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Project Officer – Policy will lead CATSINaM’s leadership and advocacy efforts, coordinate critical projects, and engage with stakeholders to deliver meaningful outcomes. This role will also contribute to strengthening systems and resources to enhance the organisation’s impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage CATSINaM’s leadership and advocacy program, aligning with organisational goals and strategic priorities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including advisory groups and CATSINaM members.
  • Stay informed on emerging public policy trends and social changes affecting members.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Identify policy risks and provide expert advice to leadership on risk management strategies.
  • Provide operational updates and recommendations to the CEO and COO.
  • Develop tools, templates, and resources to strengthen CATSINaM’s leadership and advocacy processes.
  • Drive internal knowledge sharing to improve the achievement of organisational outcomes.

Key skills, experience and attributes

  • Tertiary qualifications in nursing, midwifery, public health, health policy or a related field.
  • Proven ability to create, monitor, analyse and implement policies about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nursing and midwifery workforce and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
  • Strong understanding of issues impacting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nursing and midwifery workforce.
  • Proven ability to engage with various stakeholders in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health as well as the nursing and midwifery sectors.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and stakeholder needs.
  • Proven ability to monitor project progress, evaluate outcomes, and identify areas for improvement.
  • A proactive, curious, and detail-oriented approach to problem-solving.
  • Willingness to travel as required (valid driver’s license essential)
